Everyone Loves A Little Black Dress

My fashion rule of thumb: Whenever in doubt, pull the black dress out!  A basic little black dress is a timeless piece that can be pulled off for just about any occasion.  The trick is finding one that will have a fantastic fit and a durable fabric.

Try some of these great options to find what works best for you:

Little Black Dress

Once the perfect black dress is found, it is all about accessorizing for the occassion.  For a cocktail or evening event, wear gold or red heels and pair them with a chunky, statement piece of jewelry.  For a day event, grab a pair of flats and a cardigan or (my favorite) tan cowboy boots and a denim jacket. You can even wear your little black dress for a wedding.  Try accessorizing it with a floral scarf and strappy heels.  Transition any of these looks into colder weather by adding heavier fabrics for layering and tights.

Make The Environment Your Fashion Purpose

As Earth Month starts on Sunday, Neroli has taken additional time to focus on ways that we can help in protecting the environment, both as a company and as individuals in the community.  We believe the smallest initiative can make the biggest difference and every aspect of life can be linked to this great cause.  On the basis of fashion, environmental actions are endless and this week’s blog will cover a few fashion initiatives Neroli has taken that you as an individual can participate in and hopefully be inspired by.

DIY Re-purposing Scarves:

Take an old t-shirt and cut it into strips of fabric, wrapping one strip of fabric around the others to secure them together.   Sew the wrapped strip or simply knot it for a re-purposed scarf.

Save a tree by using an old scarf to wrap a gift.  Not only does this option give the recipient reusable packaging, but it also cuts back on paper use.

Here is a step-by-step to turn your favorite scarf into a skirt.

For additional re-purposing ideas , follow Neroli’s Pinterest page and click on our Re-purposed board.

Aveda Lash Abundance Product Update

Aveda Issues Voluntary Consumer Recall of Lash Abundance Boosting Serum
The care and comfort of our guests is of the utmost importance which is why we would like to share the following statement released by Aveda yesterday regarding the recent events correlating with the Lash Abundance Boosting Serum launch:

BLAINE, MINNESOTA, March 6, 2012 – The Aveda Corporation (“Aveda”) today announced a voluntary consumer recall of its Lash Abundance Boosting Serum after Aveda determined that the preservative system in the formula may not be sufficient to protect against certain microorganisms.   Aveda is recalling all Lash Abundance Boosting Serum from anyone who has purchased or received this product.   The product launched to consumers on or about February 12, 2012 in the United States, Canada and Australia, March 1 in limited European markets, and preview samples were distributed prior to that time.

Aveda conducted a thorough evaluation and determined that the risk of eye irritation or infection in healthy individuals following use of this product is low. However, there could be a heightened health risk for some consumers, such as individuals with pre-existing cornea conditions, users of permanent or extended wear contact lenses, or those with weakened or suppressed immune systems.

This recall affects all Lash Abundance Boosting Serum products.  Consumers should stop using this product and discard or return it immediately.  Consumers may obtain a full refund by returning the product or presenting a receipt to the place of purchase or by calling Aveda’s consumer line at the following number:

-          U.S.: 1-800-342-4121

No other Aveda products are affected.

“Our number one priority is the safety of our consumers, which is why we have voluntarily initiated this recall of Lash Abundance Boosting Serum,” stated Dominique Conseil, President of Aveda.  “We are sorry for this inconvenience and any concern this has caused.”

Lash Abundance Boosting Serum has been sold to consumers through salons, retail stores, Aveda Institutes and Aveda’s websites.

A Classic Look for Any Age

How To Style A Blouse and Blue Jeans for All Ages

The topic of this week’s blog is on one of the most frequently asked questions that I hear in regards to fashion, “Is this acceptable to be wearing at my age?” Everyone wants to look their best and feel their best, no matter what their age. Current trends can, however, be hard for individuals to translate to an appropriate attire for their respective age.  Who can blame them?  All we see on our high fashion runways today are extremely tall, thin, and young models sporting the current trends. When looking to our celebrities for style advice, we must realize that they have several people helping them to look years younger than they are and while they may get away with wearing a gorgeous evening gown to a day on the job, we need a quick couple of items to throw on (after we finish doing our own hair and make up) that will fit our much less eccentric company dress code or daily attire. Allow me to introduce you to your personal stylist.  The following is your guide on dressing in a classic look of a blouse and blue jeans through the decades.

Twenties

JCREW

Now is the time to experiment with the trend of bright colored blue pants.  Pair the bright bottoms with a more basic blouse so you don’t overpower your entire body with vibrant colors.

Thirties

JCREW

Put a spin on your blouse by choosing one with a print or add a punch of color by throwing on a cardigan as a layering piece.  Keep your bottoms a darker color to offset the bright top.

Forties

JCREW

Give a classic button down blouse and blue jeans a more casual look by rolling rather than cuffing the sleeves.  Add a belt and tuck the front portion of your blouse in.

Fifties/Sixties

VICTORIA'S SECRET

Pair dark blue jeans with a dark top, offsetting it with a subtle, vertical pinstripe.  Tuck in the blouse and add a belt (adding a punch of color with a belt also helps to offset the dark ensemble).

Color Code

Communication between individuals comes in various forms.  Though verbal communication is the most commonly recognized form, we communicate with more people daily through our nonverbal communication.   Our appearance, especially our wardrobe and color choices, is a high impact way to communicate with others. Clothing is a means of self-expression, which subconsciously divulges information on a daily basis about our mood and personality to others.  The next time you get dressed, take a look at the color wheel to determine what the colors you wear are saying about you.

Color Wheel

Through my studies of fashion design and emphasis on the psychological aspect of how color and silhouette effect an individual’s self-esteem, I have gathered information on the psychological aspect of colors from my previous work and paraphrased it below.

Red: This color expresses strength, confidence, and passion.  Be cautious of when you are wearing red as it can be perceived as hostile or pushy while negotiating.

Orange: Orange exudes happiness, creativity, and success.  It is said that orange can increase energy and it also stimulates social interaction.

Yellow: This color is also a symbol of happiness and energy, also triggering feelings of optimism.  Yellow encourages communication, but too much of this color may cause feelings of anger.

Green: Green is a well-known hue for representing nature and growth, but what most don’t know is that it also conveys safety and stability, harmony and self-control. Due to it’s emotional ties, it can help eliminate depression and nervousness.

Blue: Blue creates a sense of trust, allowing for open communication.  It also produces a feeling of peace, loyalty, and intelligence.  This color can be calming and healing.

Purple: Due to the fact that kings and queens used to be the only members of society who could afford the cost of purple dyes, this hue represents luxury and power.  It also gives an ambience of mystery.

Pink: This color has the societal stereotype of femininity, but it also creates calmness.  It is said to calm aggression.

White: White symbolizes purity and innocence.  It is a color to represent first times, which is why it is the color for weddings dresses, baptismal gowns, and other special events.

Black: This is a color of authority and power.  Make sure you smile while wearing black, it can be intimidating to others.
